The Common Rose Butterfly

A striking visitor to the Ubud jungle is the Common Rose (Pachiliopta Aristolochiae). This beautiful, black-winged butterfly is famous for the bright red crescents on its hindwings and its distinctive red body. These vibrant colors are not just for show; they are a clear warning to predators.

The Common Rose is poisonous. Its caterpillars feed exclusively on the toxic Aristolochia (Dutchman's Pipe) vine, storing the plant's toxins for life. This butterfly is so effective at deterring predators that other, harmless species (like the female Great Mormon) have evolved to mimic its appearance.

Protecting the wild vines and untouched corners of our organic garden provides a sanctuary for this important species. Seeing the Common Rose float by is a fascinating lesson in survival, a glimpse into the complex, interconnected life of the jungle that surrounds us.
