The river reaches you before anything else. Nirvanaloka is a spa above the water: nine treatment rooms deep in the jungle's green, each with twin beds, so no one has to relax alone.
The ritual starts at your feet, warm water and betel leaf, before oil and slow hands work the day out of your shoulders. The oils begin in our own garden: turmeric, ginger, lemongrass. Wide glass lets the forest in while you lie still; a bathtub waits by the window, a rain shower, an air bath.
When the hands finish, the sauna's heat takes over. Then the jacuzzi outside, open to the trees. Then a drawn bath, while the river keeps talking below.
