The Giant Crow Butterfly

Floating through the Ubud jungle with a slow, confident flight is the Giant Crow (Euploea phaenareta). As the largest member of the "crow" butterfly family, its broad, dark brown wings are patterned with faint, whitish-violet spots. This leisurely flight is a clear signal to predators: it is unpalatable and poisonous.

The Giant Crow is a milkweed butterfly. Its toxic defense comes directly from its food source as a caterpillar. The larvae feed on plants in the Apocynaceae (milkweed) family, such as the native Cerbera odollam or "Pong Pong Tree," ingesting and storing the plant's toxins.

Our commitment to a wild, organic garden means these natural host plants are protected, not cleared. The presence of the Giant Crow is a sign of a truly healthy, balanced ecosystem. It’s a moment of quiet majesty, a dark jewel that thrives only where the jungle is allowed to flourish untouched.
