The Lime Butterfly

One of the most common and active butterflies in the Ubud jungle is the Lime Butterfly (Papilio demoleus). Also known as the Lemon Butterfly, it’s a fast-flying swallowtail, instantly recognizable by its beautiful, complex pattern of black and pale yellow spots. Unlike many swallowtails, it has no tails, and its hindwing features a striking red tornal spot.

The Lime Butterfly gets its name from its life's passion: citrus. In many parts of the world, it is considered a pest, as its caterpillars can quickly defoliate young lime, lemon, and orange trees. But in our organic garden, it is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Our farm-to-table philosophy means we cultivate a wide range of citrus trees (Rutaceae) for our kitchens. These trees also serve as the host plant for the Lime Butterfly. Its young caterpillars are masters of camouflage, perfectly resembling bird droppings, before transforming into the bright green, snake-like final instar. Se
