The Great Mormon Butterfly

A large, tailless, velvety-black butterfly gliding through the garden is likely the male Great Mormon (Papilio memnon). This impressive swallowtail, with a wingspan up to 15cm, is a common and welcome resident of the Ubud jungle. While the male is easily identified, the female is a master of illusion.

The Great Mormon is famous for its "polymorphic" females, meaning they can have many different forms. Many of these forms are Batesian mimics, brilliantly copying the warning colors and patterns of poisonous butterflies to fool predators. This makes spotting a female a thrilling surprise—you may see one with white, red, or even yellow markings, each a different "costume."

This fascinating butterfly is directly linked to our farm-to-table philosophy. The Great Mormon's caterpillars feed on plants in the citrus (Rutaceae) family. Our organic garden, rich with Pomelo, Lime, and other citrus trees for our kitchen, creates the perfect nursery for this magnificent species. It’s a beautiful, living example of how our resort and the wild Bali ecosystem thrive together.
