Behind the kitchen lies a farm you can walk. Meditera and Segening cook with what the garden gives, so a salad travels only a few steps from bed to plate.

The herbs at Nirvanaloka Spa come from the same garden, which makes the farm less a backdrop than a working part of the resort.

The rows are easiest in the early hours, when the paths are cooler and the leaves still hold dew. After rain the ground is soft, so closed shoes are the right choice. What is ripe changes from week to week, and we would rather tell you on the day than promise a fruit in advance.

The tropical garden

The king and queen of fruit

Across Southeast Asia, two fruits wear the crowns. Both grow in our tropical garden.

Durian from the Sanggraloka tropical garden

The king

Durian

A heavy, thorned husk and a scent you notice before you see it. Inside, the flesh is soft as custard, rich and sweet. People rarely feel halfway about it.

Mangosteen from the Sanggraloka tropical garden

The queen

Mangosteen

A deep purple rind that stains the fingers, then snow-white segments that are sweet, a little tart and cool on the tongue. Gentle where the king is bold.

Tradition pairs them: durian is said to warm the body and mangosteen to cool it, so one is often eaten after the other. Ask us on WhatsApp to hear whether they are in season.

The weekly harvest

One day a week for each group of plants. Pick what is ripe that week.
